Running now until Wednesday 25 November
There is a particular kind of dinner where nothing on the table belongs to anyone. Dishes land in the middle, hands cross over one another, and the last of something gets divided with rather more diplomacy than it probably deserves. It is, we think, the most enjoyable way to eat — and from now until the end of November, it is how we spend our Wednesdays.
Everything in the middle
Our Sharing Menu follows the same principle as everything else that leaves this kitchen: driven by the season, inspired by the classics. What changes is the shape of it. Instead of a plate each, courses arrive together and keep arriving.
It begins with bread, still warm, and small plates to pick at while the first glass is poured. Then the larger dishes — the ones built to be cut into and passed along — with sides set down between them. Pudding comes as one thing, and enough spoons.
Everything is designed for the whole table, which means one decision instead of six, and rather more of the evening spent talking than reading. Nobody suffers menu envy, and nobody has to watch someone else’s dinner arrive looking better than their own.
An autumn, week by week
There are fourteen Wednesdays between now and the end of November, and the menu will move as the produce does. The early weeks still carry the last of the summer. By October we are into Chiltern game, mushrooms, roots and brassicas, slow braises and orchard fruit. Come November it is the full comfort of it — deeper, darker, and exactly what you want when it has been black outside since five o’clock.
Come more than once and you will not eat the same dinner twice. That is rather the point.
Wednesdays in Old Amersham
Wednesday is the day our week begins, and it has a character of its own. The dining room is calmer than a Saturday, the service unhurried, the Old Town quiet outside the windows. It is the sort of evening you can book on a whim and still feel you have made an occasion of.
It suits a birthday that does not want a fuss, a long-overdue catch-up, or a work dinner where the food does the work of breaking the ice. Bring the people you actually want to talk to. Four is plenty. Eight is better.
The practical part
- When — Every Wednesday, now until 25 November
- Table size — 2 guests or more
- Service — Dinner, 6pm – 9pm
Dietary requirements and allergies are no trouble at all — tell us when you book and the kitchen will build around them. All prices include VAT, and a 13% service charge will be added to your bill.
Tables go quickly for this one, and Wednesdays between now and Christmas fill faster than people expect. If you have a date in mind, take it while it is there.
